The Canadian Border Services Agency has just released May’s airport duty free sales volumes. In total they grew marginally by 0.17% to C$37.3 million.
Yet May’s Canadian international air passenger growth was comfortably in excess of 8% points with almost 3 million passengers departing on international flights out of the country’s 16 international airports.
At first glance therefore there appears to be a disconnect between strong international passenger growth and static airport Duty Free sales. But are the key category sales numbers really as sluggish as the top line numbers appear to suggest?
